Who are Crew-Glue and what is team building?

Crew-Glue's blogWho are Crew-Glue and what is team building?

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford

One of the most common misconceptions between team building and team bonding is that they’re the same.

Whilst we firmly believe there is place and a need for both, it’s important to understand the difference between the two.

Team bonding is more commonly associated with purely fun activities (karaoke, team drinks, dinner out etc) that help teams find common ground and get to know each other on a more personal level.

Whereas Team Building is comprised of dedicated activities and events that are designed to help team members better understand themselves as individuals and how they like to work, and then to understand others and how to work together effectively as a team.

Better understanding ourselves, our strengths, our talents and what motivates us; enables us to do the same for our teammates and for teams to naturally develop.

Crew-Glue exists to help support and expedite the natural stages teams go through – as explained here in Bruce Tuckman’s model of team development.

The Forming Stage – getting to know each other and getting acquainted with the team

The Storming Stage – known as the ‘difficult’ part. Different personalities emerge and conflict and competition can form as a result

The Norming Stage – conflict is resolved and there is a level of unity amongst the team

The Performing Stage – the team is mature, organised, high-functioning and completing their tasks to top-quality level

The Adjourning Stage – the natural ‘end’ stage to a team. Members may leave, move roles or the task may be finished.

By expediting the natural team-building process we’re able to help crew reach a high-performance team status sooner, giving them the very best chance of success when starting a season or launching a new vessel.

So, how do we do it?

We understand that every crew and its crew members are different, and we firmly believe that the success of building a strong team is achieved by the individuals within the team.

This is the foundation that all our sessions are built on. We work with you to ensure that the root causes of the challenges you are facing onboard are identified and we tailor the programme to you and your crew.

How can we help?

We wouldn’t be able to talk about what we do without acknowledging one of the biggest challenges we all face right now – Covid-19.

The outside pressures being faced by crew have changed exponentially in the last few months and providing crew with the tools they need to be a strong team is more important now than ever.

Covid-19 has without a doubt changed the way we all do things, including how we travel. As a result, like many others we’ve adapted and pivoted how we work.

We’ve been working hard at developing our sessions and are pleased to announce that these are now virtual! We use the same tools and strategies that are the foundation for our onboard sessions but have adapted the way we teach them for the online environment.

Ready to learn more?

Our sessions are still bespoke and tailored to you and your crews needs but will be delivered virtually!

You’ll be able to choose from three courses –

Course 1: Insight

Specially developed for a new team or department or one ready to boost their performance

Course 2: Insight + Engage

Specially developed for existing teams, those with minor crew changes and those ready to super-charge their performance

Course 3: Insight + Engage + Commit

Specially developed for established teams who are ready to go to the next level

We’re looking forward to getting back onboard when we can but are delighted that we can now offer Crew-Glue training virtually in the future.

We will be live in the next few weeks and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

If this is something you or your crew would like support with, please get in touch and see how we can help you.
